All lawyers are required to comply with the Code of Ethics of the Swedish Bar Association. The rules state, among other things, that a lawyer’s fee must be reasonable.
Several factors are taken into account when assessing what constitutes a reasonable fee. The factors that are relevant include what has been agreed with the client, the scope, nature and complexity of the assignment, as well as the lawyer’s skill and the results of the work.
LEGAL PROTECTION
Legal expenses cover is included in most home, house and holiday home insurance policies. The insurance applies to the insured person as a private individual, and for legal expenses cover to come into effect, a dispute must have arisen. As a general rule, to qualify for legal expenses cover, the policy must have been in force for at least two consecutive years at the time the dispute arises, but it does not have to have been with the same insurance company.

LEGAL AID
If you do not have insurance to cover the costs of your dispute, you may be entitled to legal aid. Before applying for legal aid, the lawyer/attorney must provide a minimum of one and a maximum of two hours of advice for a set fee. You must pay this consultation fee yourself.

THE CONSUMER DISPUTES COMMITTEE
A client who is dissatisfied with the service provided by a legal practitioner may be able to have their case heard by the Consumer Disputes Committee of the Swedish Bar Association.
The Consumer Disputes Committee hears disputes between clients and their representatives involving amounts from SEK 1 000 to SEK 200 000. The decision of the Consumer Disputes Committee is binding for lawyers.
